Procedures for Intra-district (Voluntary) Transfer Requests

The District maintains an Open Enrollment Policy which, within certain guidelines, allows a family to request enrollment for the student at a District school other than the school assigned.  Students living with a caregiver or in a shared family residence are not eligible to participate in the Intra-district Transfer Program. In addition, the District will make the school placement for Caregivers and Shared Residences.  If you wish to request enrollment for the student at a District school other than the school assigned, you will need to obtain a Permit to Register at the Enrollment Centers and complete an Intra-district Transfer Application. The transfer applications will be available on February 1, 2007, from the District Office Receptionist at the above address, and on the District website, www.smuhsd.org

Transfer requests for siblings are automatically granted IF that information is stated on the form and the application is received by the March 1, 2007, deadline.  (Sibling is defined in District Policy 314.3.4 as an enrolling student with a brother or sister currently enrolled in the eleventh or a lower grade level and who lives in the same house with the same parent or legal court-appointed guardian).

In order to be considered for the above, an application must be submitted and reflect that a sibling is either currently enrolled at the requested school or who has graduated in 2004, 2005, or 2006, and who lives in the same residence with the same parent or legal guardian.”

Completed applications MUST BE RECEIVED AT THE DISTRICT OFFICE – NOT THE SCHOOLS, by 4:30 p.m., on THURSDAY, March 1, 2007. There will be no exceptions. The Receptionist will issue a receipt for hand delivered applications. If you mail the application, please enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope for your receipt. Only one application per student may be submitted.

Requests for transfer will be processed in random order after the closing date of March 1, 2007. Requests will be granted, providing this can be accomplished without going beyond the limits of school capacity.  If more requests for transfer are received than there is space available to attend a specific school, a lottery will be conducted among the applicants requesting transfer to that school to fill any vacancies which may exist. The intent is to be certain that the school can first accommodate students who reside within its attendance area.

Applicants will be notified by mail after March 15, 2007, as to the status of their transfer request.  PLEASE BE AWARE THAT approved transfers are final. If you have questions relating to these procedures, please contact the Attendance and Welfare Department at 558-2259
